When the first teaser and announcement for ULKAA dropped, the internet did what the internet does best: it reacted, loudly. Comment sections filled up fast, and a good chunk of them said the same thing: the suit looked a little too close to Black Adam, a little too close to Moon Knight. At DK Films, that reaction didn't get brushed aside. It got taken seriously.
Back to the Drawing Board, Literally
Instead of defending the original design, the ULKAA team went back into development and rebuilt the superhero costume from scratch. The new suit has not been revealed publicly yet. It's being held back deliberately, with the full reveal planned to land alongside the film's next teaser.
"The moment people said it reminded them of something else, that was the only signal we needed," said Dushyant Kapoor, founder of DK Films and director of ULKAA. "We're not interested in building a hero that feels borrowed. We went back, we rebuilt the design, and we're not showing it until it's ready to stand on its own."
The Bigger Reveal: Welcome to the DKSU
The costume rework turned out to be the spark for something bigger. DK Films has confirmed that ULKAA is the opening chapter of a new shared universe, the DKSU (DK Superhero Universe), India's newest attempt at a homegrown, interconnected superhero franchise.
What makes the DKSU different from the outset is how it's being built. DK Films says the universe is being shaped in direct response to audience feedback, not in spite of it, with the costume redesign as the first proof of that.
"This isn't a universe we're building in a boardroom and handing down to audiences," Kapoor said. "The DKSU is being built by the audience itself. If you have an opinion, we actually want to hear it, and you've already seen what we do with it."
Kapoor has personally started inviting people to be part of that process, not just as viewers, but as participants in shaping where the DKSU goes next.
